Jeddah

Red Sea gateway

Jeddah is Saudi Arabia's second-largest city and principal port on the Red Sea.

It serves as the gateway for millions of Muslim pilgrims traveling to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina.

The city functions as a major commercial hub and is considerably more cosmopolitan than the Saudi interior: We flew into Jeddah before continuing to Mecca.

Also spelled Jedda or Jidda.
