Strait of Hormuz
Gulf's narrow exit
The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula, connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the open ocean.
About a fifth of the world's oil passes through it, making it one of the most strategically important chokepoints in global shipping.
Tensions in the region regularly raise concerns about disruption to oil supplies.
