Ganges River
India's holiest waterway
The Ganges is a major river flowing through northern India and Bangladesh, sacred in Hinduism.
Hindus consider its waters purifying; millions bathe in it during religious festivals, and ashes of the dead are scattered there.
The river sustains one of the world's most densely populated regions.
Also called the Ganga.
