manta ray

Winged sea creature

A manta ray is a very large tropical ray with winglike pectoral fins spanning up to seven meters.

Mantas swim by flapping these fins and are filter feeders, harmless to humans despite their size.

The name comes from Spanish for blanket or cloak, describing their broad, flat shape.

We saw manta rays gliding beneath the boat.
