polyps

Tentacled sessile creatures

Polyps are small growths that project from a mucous membrane, found in the nose, colon, uterus, and elsewhere.

Most are benign, though some—particularly in the colon—can become cancerous: The colonoscopy revealed several polyps that were removed for biopsy.

In marine biology, a polyp is the sedentary form of cnidarians like coral and sea anemones, with a cylindrical body and tentacles around a central mouth.
