Poles

Gdańsk natives, perhaps

Poles are the extreme endpoints of an axis—Earth's North and South Poles, or the terminals of a magnet or battery.

The word extends to opposite positions generally: The candidates occupy opposite poles on immigration.

A pole is also a long slender rod: a fishing pole, a tent pole, a pole for vaulting.

To be poles apart is to differ completely. (Capitalized Poles are people from Poland.)
