Aryans

Ancient Indo-Iranian peoples

Aryans has two distinct uses.

In historical linguistics, it refers to speakers of Indo-Iranian languages and their descendants, particularly ancient peoples of Iran and the Indian subcontinent.

The term was appropriated by Nazi ideology to designate a supposed master race of northern Europeans, a pseudoscientific concept used to justify genocide and racial persecution.

Because of this association, the term carries heavy baggage and is avoided outside scholarly discussions of ancient languages and cultures.
