Mithridates

Mithridates was the name of several kings of Pontus, an ancient kingdom on the Black Sea coast of Asia Minor.

The most famous, Mithridates VI (134–63 BCE), was a formidable enemy of Rome who legendarily made himself immune to poisons by taking small doses throughout his life.

This practice gave rise to the term mithridatism, meaning the gradual building of tolerance to a poison through repeated exposure to non-lethal amounts.
