habituation
Stimulus response decline
Habituation is the gradual decrease in response to a repeated stimulus.
A dog stops barking at passing trains; you stop noticing the hum of your refrigerator.
The term appears in psychology and neuroscience to describe this basic form of learning—the brain filtering out what no longer seems relevant.
Habituation to the noise took about a week.
