hemlock

Philosopher's fatal draught

Hemlock is a poisonous plant of the parsley family, notorious since antiquity—Socrates was executed by drinking hemlock extract.

The name also applies to a group of evergreen trees unrelated to the poison plant, valued for timber and ornamental use: a stand of eastern hemlock.

The tree's feathery foliage supposedly resembled the poisonous herb's leaves.
