Pontus

Ancient Anatolian kingdom

Pontus is an ancient region on the southern coast of the Black Sea, in what is now northeastern Turkey.

The name comes from the Greek word for sea.

The Kingdom of Pontus was a significant Hellenistic state, most notably under Mithridates VI, who challenged Roman expansion.

In the New Testament, Pontus appears as the homeland of early Christians.

Aquila was a Jew from Pontus.
