Mandalay

Irrawaddy river port

Mandalay is the second-largest city in Myanmar (Burma), located in the country's central region along the Irrawaddy River.

It served as the last royal capital of the Burmese monarchy before British annexation in 1885.

The name evokes exotic remoteness in English, largely through Kipling's poem "Mandalay": on the road to Mandalay, where the flying fishes play.
