Pali
Theravada canonical language
Pali is an ancient language of the Indian subcontinent, closely related to Sanskrit.
It serves as the liturgical language of Theravada Buddhism, preserving the earliest Buddhist scriptures in the Pali Canon.
The language has no native script and is written in whatever alphabet is local to its use—Thai, Burmese, Sinhalese, or Roman letters.
Scholars of Buddhism study Pali to access original texts: She learned Pali to read the suttas in their original form.
