scripture
Holy written word
Scripture is sacred religious writing, especially the Bible.
In Christian contexts, scripture or the scriptures refers to the Old and New Testaments: Scripture teaches that faith without works is dead.
Other religions have their own scriptures—the Quran, the Torah, the Vedas.
To cite something as scripture is to treat it as authoritative truth, sometimes ironically: He quoted the company handbook as scripture.
