Irrawaddy

Myanmar's main river

The Irrawaddy is Myanmar's principal river, flowing roughly north to south through the country's heartland before emptying into the Andaman Sea through an extensive delta.

It serves as a major transportation artery and the center of Burmese rice cultivation.

The Irrawaddy dolphin, a freshwater species found in the river and nearby coastal waters, takes its name from it.
