RIP
Memorial stone acronym
RIP stands for "rest in peace," the traditional epitaph from Latin requiescat in pace.
It appears on gravestones and in announcements of death.
Online, RIP has become a versatile expression of mourning—genuine for actual deaths, playful for minor losses: RIP to my diet. (Lowercase rip is the verb meaning to tear.)
