phototypesetter

Light-based type machine

A phototypesetter is a machine that sets type by projecting characters photographically onto light-sensitive paper or film, rather than using metal type.

Phototypesetters dominated publishing from the 1960s through the 1980s, replacing hot-metal composition and later giving way to digital typesetting.

The operator of such a machine is also called a phototypesetter.
