linecasting
Molten slug production
Linecasting is a method of typesetting in which each line of text is cast as a single metal slug rather than assembled from individual letters.
The Linotype machine, invented in 1884, revolutionized newspaper publishing by allowing operators to set type far faster than by hand.
The term now appears mainly in printing history, the technology having been displaced by phototypesetting and digital methods.
