Kaliningrad
Baltic Russian enclave
Kaliningrad is a Russian city and exclave on the Baltic Sea, geographically separated from mainland Russia by Lithuania and Poland.
It was the German city of Königsberg until 1945, when it was annexed by the Soviet Union and renamed after Soviet leader Mikhail Kalinin.
The city retains strategic military importance for Russia and occasional geopolitical tension arises over transit rights through EU and NATO territory.
Kaliningrad has become a flashpoint in discussions of European security.
