Soviet architecture

Eastern Bloc buildings

Soviet architecture refers to building styles developed in the USSR from 1917 to 1991.

Early Soviet architecture embraced bold Constructivist experimentation, but Stalin-era buildings shifted to monumental neoclassicism with ornate facades and heroic sculptures.

Post-Stalin construction turned utilitarian, producing vast quantities of prefabricated concrete apartment blocks—the gray, repetitive housing that now defines the term: The neighborhood had that bleak Soviet architecture feel.
