Hanseatic

Northern trade league

Hanseatic refers to the Hanseatic League, a medieval confederation of merchant guilds and market towns across northern Europe, particularly along the Baltic and North Sea coasts.

The league dominated trade from the 13th through 17th centuries.

The term now appears mainly in historical contexts or in the names of institutions preserving the heritage: Hamburg and Lübeck were prominent Hanseatic cities.
