Brandenburg Gate

German reunification symbol

The Brandenburg Gate is a monumental stone archway in Berlin, Germany's most recognizable landmark.

Built in the late 18th century as a city gate, it stood at the boundary between East and West Berlin during the Cold War, becoming a powerful symbol of German division—and after 1989, of reunification.

Crowds gathered at the Brandenburg Gate when the Wall fell.
