Brandenburg
Potsdam's surrounding region
Brandenburg is a state in northeastern Germany surrounding but not including Berlin.
Historically, the Margraviate of Brandenburg was a major principality of the Holy Roman Empire, and Brandenburg-Prussia formed the core of what became the Kingdom of Prussia.
The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, though located outside the state, takes its name from this region.
