wound

Curled or injured

Wound has two pronunciations with different meanings.

With the "oo" sound, a wound is an injury where skin or tissue is cut or broken: a gunshot wound, wounds that wouldn't heal.

The verb means to inflict such injury, or to hurt emotionally: His words wounded her deeply.

With the "ow" sound, wound is the past tense of wind—to coil or turn: She wound the thread around the spool, The road wound through the mountains.
