ulcer

Stomach lining wound

An ulcer is an open sore on the skin or on a mucous membrane inside the body, typically slow to heal and sometimes recurring.

The most familiar types are peptic ulcers, which form in the stomach or intestinal lining and cause burning pain.

Figuratively, ulcer describes something that festers or corrupts: Poverty is an ulcer on society.

The word also appears in the stereotype of the stressed executive with an ulcer, though stress is now known to be a minor factor compared to bacteria and medications.
