field dressing
Emergency wound care
Field dressing is the emergency treatment of a wound in the field—away from proper medical facilities.
The term comes from military contexts, where soldiers apply bandages and basic care before evacuation.
Field dressing also means gutting and cleaning a hunted animal on the spot: He field dressed the deer before carrying it back to camp.
