graze

Feed on pasture

Graze has two distinct meanings.

One involves feeding: cattle graze on grass, moving across a field eating as they go.

By extension, people graze when they eat small amounts throughout the day rather than sitting down to meals: I grazed on snacks all afternoon.

The other graze means to scrape lightly in passing—a bullet grazes an arm, a car grazes a fence.

A graze is also the resulting scrape or abrasion: She cleaned the graze on her knee.
