wound up
Ended up tense
Wound up describes a state of nervous tension or excitement: She was too wound up to sleep.
It also means having arrived at a final state or position, often unexpectedly: We wound up at the wrong restaurant, He wound up becoming a lawyer after all.
The two senses derive from different verbs—winding a spring tight versus winding along a path to its end.
