hatching

Breaking the shell

Hatching is the emergence of a young animal from an egg, or the act of incubating eggs until they hatch: We watched the hatching of the chicks.

In drawing and engraving, hatching is the technique of shading with closely spaced parallel lines; cross-hatching uses intersecting sets of lines for darker tones.

To hatch a plan is to devise it secretly: They were hatching a scheme to steal the documents.
