photoengraving

Image transfer technique

Photoengraving is a process for making printing plates by transferring a photographic image onto a metal surface, then etching away the unexposed areas with acid.

The technique was central to newspaper and magazine illustration before digital printing.

The term also refers to a plate or print made by this process: The book's photoengravings have held up remarkably well.
