California Gold Rush

1849 western stampede

The California Gold Rush was a mass migration to California between 1848 and 1855 after gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill.

Hundreds of thousands of prospectors—called forty-niners for the peak year of 1849—flooded the territory, transforming California from a remote frontier into a state.

The event reshaped American westward expansion and established San Francisco as a major city.

By extension, any gold rush describes a frenzied pursuit of sudden wealth or opportunity.
