pawl

Toothed wheel stopper

A pawl is a hinged or pivoting lever that engages with the teeth of a ratchet wheel, allowing rotation in one direction while preventing backward movement.

The clicking sound of a ratchet mechanism comes from the pawl catching each tooth: The pawl clicked as she wound the winch.
