windjammers

Large square-rigged ships

Windjammers are large sailing ships, especially the commercial cargo vessels of the late 19th and early 20th centuries that relied entirely on wind power.

The term originally carried slight contempt from steamship sailors, suggesting these vessels merely "jammed" into the wind.

Now it's often nostalgic, applied to tall ships preserved for training or tourism: We watched the windjammers parade into harbor.

A windjammer can also be someone who talks excessively—a windbag.
