Joan of Arc
Martyred French teenager
Joan of Arc was a French peasant girl who, claiming divine visions, led French forces to key victories in the Hundred Years' War before being captured, tried for heresy, and burned at the stake in 1431 at age nineteen.
She was canonized as a saint in 1920.
Her name evokes martyrdom, female courage, or zealous conviction: She's the Joan of Arc of the environmental movement.
