maharajas

Rulers of principalities

Maharajas is the plural of maharaja, a title for an Indian prince or king, especially one who ruled a princely state during the British colonial period.

The word combines Sanskrit terms meaning "great" and "king," so a maharaja outranked an ordinary raja.

The feminine equivalent is maharani.

Though the title lost official status after Indian independence in 1947, it survives in references to descendants of royal families and in contexts evoking lavish wealth or aristocratic style.
