venous blood
Blue in diagrams
Venous blood is blood returning to the heart through the veins, having delivered oxygen to tissues and picked up carbon dioxide.
It appears darker than arterial blood due to lower oxygen content.
In diagrams and medical contexts, veins carrying venous blood are conventionally colored blue, though the blood itself is dark red: The nurse drew venous blood from the patient's arm.
