pulmonary artery

Deoxygenated blood's highway

The pulmonary artery carries blood from the heart to the lungs, where it picks up oxygen and releases carbon dioxide.

Unlike most arteries, which carry oxygen-rich blood, the pulmonary artery transports deoxygenated blood—the only artery in the body to do so.

It originates from the right ventricle and splits into left and right branches, one for each lung.
