clotting

Forming a scab

Clotting is the process by which a liquid, especially blood, thickens into a semi-solid mass.

Blood clotting stops bleeding from wounds; without it, even minor cuts would be dangerous.

Clotting can also be harmful when it blocks blood vessels: The medication prevents clotting in the arteries.

The word applies to other liquids that coagulate or curdle.
