varicose
Swollen and twisted
Varicose describes veins that have become abnormally swollen, twisted, and visible beneath the skin, typically in the legs: varicose veins.
The condition results from weakened valves that allow blood to pool.
The word occasionally applies to other dilated or knotted structures but rarely appears outside the phrase varicose veins.
