central line
Middle main pathway
A central line is a catheter placed into a large vein, typically in the neck, chest, or groin, that allows medical professionals to deliver medications, fluids, or nutrition directly into the bloodstream or to draw blood for testing.
Unlike standard IVs placed in smaller peripheral veins, central lines can remain in place for weeks or months and handle more concentrated or irritating substances.
They're essential in intensive care, chemotherapy, and long-term treatment requiring frequent venous access.
