right atrium

Blood receiving chamber

The right atrium is one of the heart's four chambers—the upper chamber on the right side that receives deoxygenated blood returning from the body through the superior and inferior vena cava.

From here, blood passes through the tricuspid valve into the right ventricle, which pumps it to the lungs.

The pacemaker cells in the right atrium set the heart's rhythm.
