valves

Heart has four

Valves are devices that control the flow of liquids or gases through a pipe or channel, opening or closing to regulate passage: a heart valve, the valve on a radiator.

In brass instruments, valves redirect air through different tube lengths to change pitch.

The term extends to any structure that permits flow in one direction while preventing backflow: The veins have valves that keep blood moving toward the heart.
