veins

Carry blood back

Veins are blood vessels that carry blood toward the heart, as distinguished from arteries, which carry blood away.

The word extends to similar tubular structures: the veins of a leaf, the veins in marble or wood grain.

A vein can also be a distinctive quality running through something: a vein of dark humor throughout the novel, in a similar vein.

In mining, a vein is a narrow deposit of ore or mineral in rock.
