deadbolt

Keyhole security mechanism

A deadbolt is a lock mechanism that extends a solid metal bolt into the door frame, operated by a key or thumb turn rather than a spring.

Unlike spring latches, deadbolts can't be pushed back without the key, making them more secure: Make sure you lock the deadbolt before bed.

Standard on exterior doors.
