A basecamp is a main encampment providing supplies and shelter for expeditions, particularly in mountainous terrain: We established basecamp at 17,000 feet.
The term extends to any central hub from which operations are conducted.
Basecamp is also a popular project management software, where the metaphor suggests a home base for coordinating work.
