Annapurna

Nepal's deadly peak

Annapurna is a massif in the Himalayas of Nepal, containing several peaks over 7,000 meters, including Annapurna I—the tenth highest mountain in the world at 8,091 meters.

The name comes from Sanskrit meaning "full of food" or "goddess of the harvest." Annapurna I was the first eight-thousander ever climbed, summited by a French expedition in 1950.

The mountain is notorious among climbers for its high fatality rate.
