ice fields
Vast frozen plains
Ice fields are vast expanses of interconnected glaciers or permanent ice covering mountainous terrain, smaller than ice sheets but still spanning hundreds of square miles.
Unlike glaciers, which flow in defined channels, ice fields blanket the landscape with only peaks and ridges poking through: The Patagonian ice fields are among the largest outside polar regions.
The term also applies to large areas of floating sea ice.
