quit-rent
Freedom from service
Quit-rent was a small fixed rent paid by a freeholder or copyholder to a feudal lord, which released the tenant from other services or obligations.
The payment "quit" (freed) the tenant from further duties.
The term is largely historical, appearing in discussions of colonial American land tenure and English feudal law: The colonial assembly abolished quit-rents in 1779.
