tithing

Ten percent donation

Tithing is the practice of giving one-tenth of one's income to a religious institution, rooted in biblical tradition.

Many churches still expect or encourage members to tithe: Our family has been tithing since I was a child.

The term extends to any regular proportional giving.

Historically, a tithing was also an English administrative division of ten households.
