modus
Manner of operating
Modus is Latin for "way" or "method," borrowed into English mainly in phrases.
A *modus operandi* is a characteristic way of working—especially a criminal's habitual pattern: Police recognized the modus operandi from previous burglaries.
A *modus vivendi* is a practical arrangement allowing parties to coexist despite disagreements.
On its own, modus is rare but occasionally appears as shorthand: That's his modus.
